“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” John 16:7

The Apostles would not have to do their work alone Before, they had been sent out two-by-two – Mark 6:7 The Lord would be with them always – Matthew 28:20 The Holy Spirit had work to accomplish through them after the Lord’s departure

Convict the World of Sin, Righteousness, and Judgment John 16:8-11 Sin - they did not believe in Christ. Righteousness - Jesus was innocent of all charges the Jews had against Him. Judgment - The Lord’s resurrection would give Him authority to judge both Satan and the entire world (Acts 17:30-31).

Guide Apostles Into All Truth John 16:12-13 Those who will only hear the “red letters” of the spoken words of Jesus are not receiving “all truth.” The Holy Spirit did not reveal portions of truth to the apostles, but all truth. This does away with the need for and validity of latter-day revelations.

Tell the Apostles Things To Come John 16:13 The falling away (2 Thess. 2:3; 1 Tim. 4:1-3). Second Coming of Christ (1 Thess. 4:13-5:11). Resurrection of the dead (1 Cor. 15). Triumph of the church over the tyranny of the Roman Empire (Revelation).

How the Holy Spirit Helps Us Today The Holy Spirit does not speak directly to us as He did the apostles. As the Holy Spirit taught the apostles all things, reminded them of all things, and guided them into all truth, they wrote it down. When we read what they wrote, we can understand all things that the Holy Spirit has given the apostles.
