2. What are cognates?  Cognates – are words in two languages that are spelled, pronounced, and written the same or very similar.  Cognates also most times have the same meaning.

3. Identical Cognates: English Spanish  Tornado Tornado  Radio Radio  Chocolate Chocolate  Pizza Pizza

4. Cognates with minor spelling changes: English Spanish  Class Clase  Animals Animales  Tiger Tigre  Artist Artista

5. False Cognates:  English Spanish  Pie Pie  Embarrassed Embarazada

6. Cognate activities for the class:  When reading aloud to the class, ask the students to raise their hand when they think they have heard a cognate word. The class will then discuss the word.  When students read by themselves ask them to write down on a sticky note the cognates that they have encountered while reading the text. The sticky notes will then be placed in a class chart. The class will review the new cognates at the end of class.

7. Benefits of becoming aware of cognates  When students become aware of cognates, they use cognates in their first language to guide them in the second language.  The student’s vocabulary expands rapidly.
