Healthy People 2010 The two overarching goals of Healthy People 2010 were: ◦ 1. Increase quality and years of life; ◦ 2. Eliminate health disparities.

Healthy People 2020 Attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury and premature death. Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups. Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all. Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages.

The Mission of the YMCA Healthy Actions The YMCA will be a leader in the improvement of health in our community. Anyone committed to improving health will seek the YMCA as the destination for guidance and activity. As a convener and catalyst, the YMCA will develop relationships for a healthier community. Barriers and Enabling Factors Two frequent barriers to participation in fitness and health activities are cost and a lack of supportive facilities for physical fitness. Removing these barriers enables individuals to engage more easily in health- and fitness-related activities.

The YMCA of Greater Louisville Founded in 1853. The 10 th YMCA branch in the nation. Approximately one out of every five people within Greater Louisville are served throughout 10 membership and two service branches.

The Y’s Annual Giving Campaign The YMCA is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, community building charity, that strives to make its programs widely affordable and accessible through the YMCA Spirit Program. Contributions to the YMCA ensure access for all who wish to participate in Y programs and services.

Reducing Cost: An Incentive for Participation ◦ In 2010: The campaign provided over $5 million dollars in financial assistance to over 10,000 unique individuals and families located throughout the city of Louisville. Community Outreach Through the Spirit Campaign In 2010, member gifts to the Campaign were used to fund childcare programs and YMCA day camps. Other community collaborative programs include “Healthy Actions” and Black Achievers.

Corner Store Initiative Four retrofitted stores located in Louisville, with four more to come in 2011. Store owners are provided with bins and refrigerators for storage of fresh produce. Signs and containers are located in a store’s front area.

“Y5210” School Nutrition and Activity Program Classroom-based, and targeted to elementary school students. ◦ “5” servings of fruits or vegetables per day. ◦ “2” hours or less of screen time per day. ◦ “1” hour per day of active exercise. ◦ “0” sugar-sweetened drinks each day.
