Interpret Technical Drawing & Plans

Common Electrical Symbols

Electrical symbol are small drawings or pictograms used to represent various electrical devices in a diagram or plan of an electrical circuit. This symbols are use in sketching schematic diagrams and electrical plans for numerous types of electrical works. Practically any electrical fixture found in a house has a symbol that coincides with a particular fixture In an electrical wiring diagram. This are useful guides for an electrician or electrical contractor, and make the wiring easier to install as well.

Conductor - is an object or type of material which permits the flow of electric charges in one or more directions. Terminal - a point at which current enters or leaves an electrical device, such as a battery or a circuit. Switch - a device for making and breaking the connection In an electric circuit. Fuse - a safety device consisting of a strip of wire that melts and breaks an electric circuit if the current exceeds a safe level. Connected wire – a wire that is connected with each other.

Circuit Breaker - an automatic device for stopping the flow of current in an electric circuit as a safety measure. Ammeter - an instrument for measuring electric current in amperes. Voltmeter - an instrument for measuring electric potential in volts. Galvanometer - an instrument for detecting and measuring small electric currents. Wattmeter - a meter for measuring electric power in watts.

Wires not connected - a wire that is not connected with each other
Wires not connected - a wire that is not connected with each other. Push button - a button that is pushed to operate an electrical device. Bell - a hollow object, typically made of metal and having the shape of a deep inverted cup widening at the lip, that sounds a clear musical note when struck, typically by means of a clapper inside. Battery - a container consisting of one or more cells, in which chemical energy is converted into electricity and used as a source of power. Resistor - a device having a designed resistance to the passage of an electric current.

Capacitor - a device used to store an electric charge, consisting of one or more pairs of conductors separated by an insulator. Diode - a semiconductor device with two terminals, typically allowing the flow of current in one direction only. Lightning Arrester - electrical device inserted in a power line to protect equipment from sudden fluctuations in current. Kilowatt hour meter - An electricity meter or energy meter is a device that measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a residence, business, or an electrically powered device.  Incandescent Lamp - electric lamp consisting of a transparent or translucent glass housing containing a wire filament (usually tungsten) that emits light when heated by electricity.

Fluorescent Lamp - a glass tube that radiates light when phosphor on its inside surface is made to fluoresce by ultraviolet radiation from mercury vapor. Buzzer - an electrical device, similar to a bell, that makes a buzzing noise and is used for signaling. Speaker - Speakers are popular output devices used with computer systems. Antenna - a rod, wire, or other device used to transmit or receive radio or television signals. Male Plug - an electrical device with two or three pins that is inserted in a socket to make an electrical connection.

Electrical Sign

Electrical signs and stickers alert students, workers , and visitors to electrical hazards in the area. Alerting workers to high voltage areas, electrical hazards , power lines and other electrical equipment in the area can help prevent fires and injuries. Proper electrical signs can inform workers of the dangers in the area .

Caution – indicates some precautionary measures against potential hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. Safety Alert – indicates that a person should observe extra awareness.

Prohibition – means that any activity stated by the symbol is not allowed.
Danger – specifies hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in serious injury or even death. Warning – specifies a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in serious injury or even death.

Read and Understand instruction manual – means that a person should do some reading before doing activity Wear Eye Protection – indicates that a person should wear safety goggles or any related protection for the eyes.

Electrical Hazard – indicates that electrical hazard is present in the area.
Voltage Danger – indicates high voltage in the area and surrounding equipment.

Electrical Wiring Diagram

Pictorial Diagram – is a sketch of electrical circuit that shows the external appearance of each component. It is much like a photo graph of the circuit and uses simple image of parts. Schematic Diagram – is a sketch showing the components of the circuit using standard electrical symbols. It shows the actual number of components and how the wiring is routed but not the actual location.

Series Circuit - Is a circuit in which lamps are arranged in a chain, so that the current has only one path to take. Parallel Circuit – is a circuit in which lamp are connected across the wires. The voltage across each load on a parallel circuit is the same. The advantage of using parallel circuit is that even if one of the lamps fails, the remaining lamps will still function.
