2 The Covenants of God Proper understanding of the nature and purposes of the covenants of God is essential to “rightly dividing the word of truth”, 2 Tim 2:15 Much misuse: Catholics and Protestants, Sabbatarians, Premillennialists, Mormons, JW’s, etc., and even some brethren Faith is strengthened and assured by knowing the role of the Old Testament law 2

3 The Law of Moses First / Old Covenant, Heb 8:6-9, 13 – Who? Israel, Rom 9:4; Deut 5:1-3 Prepare to send Savior, Gen 22:18; Exo 19:5- 6; Gal 4:4-5 – What? Deut 4:10-14 – How long? Gal 3:19 (16), 24-25 “Added” to the promise until the Seed came New covenant promised, dedicated and now in force, Heb 8:6; 9:15-17 3

4 What the LOM Accomplished Taught Israel to fear God, Deut 4:10 – In order to survive in the land, Deut 4:40 Identified sin and its results, Rom 7:13 – Knowledge of sin, Rom 3:20; 7:7-8 – Knowledge of sin’s bondage, Gal 3:22, 10; 4:24 – LOM did not sanction sin, Rom 7:10-13 Tutor to bring men to Christ, Gal 3:23-25 – “Guardian and guide for boys” (Thayer) 4

8 What LOM Is Not For Today Not for the sinner’s salvation, Rom 3:20- 26; Gal 2:21; 3:21 – Inheritance of the promise not by the law, Gal 3:18 – Could not “perfect” (complete, finish) sinners, Heb 10:1 – Christ and His new covenant do, Heb 10:14-18 Not our binding authority, Matt 17:5; Col 2:14-17; Acts 15:10-11 8

9 What LOM Is For Today Our learning, Rom 15:4 – Warnings against sin (1 Cor 10:6, 11) – Taught to be patient, Rom 15:4 – Taught to fear God and wait on Him (hope in, fear), Micah 7:7 9

10 The Law of Moses With this knowledge, we understand: – Where to learn how to be saved, Rom 1:16 – Where to learn how to worship, Jno 4:21-23 – Where to find authority for all we do, Col 3:17 – How to properly use and benefit from the Old Testament, Rom 15:4 10
