Games can create powerful learning experiences. James Paul Gee, an expert in game-based learning and an iCivics advisor, lays out the essential game characteristics that make games useful for learning. 1 Game experiences are structured by specific goals. These experiences have to be interpreted, which means thinking during and after the game. Students learn from games when they get immediate feedback and also have a chance to explain errors. Learners benefit from multiple opportunities to apply and gradually generalize concepts.
