Accelerated Reader Policies, Procedures, and General Information

General Information ● All classroom teachers in grades 1-4 and ELA teachers in grades 5-8 must participate. ● Students can take Accelerated Reader Quizzes during school hours. ● Fidelity is important to ensure success of this program.

STAR Testing ● First step before Accelerated Reader ● Teachers should test all students using STAR by September 26. ● 15-20 minutes to administer ●Provides a grade equivalent level and zone of proximal development for each student

G.E. (Grade Equivalent) ● Provided by STAR ● Current reading level of the student ● Listed as a number and a decimal, representing grade level and month ●For example, a G.E. of 3.5 would represent third grade, fifth month.

Z.P.D. (Zone of Proximal Development) ● Establishes a reading range for students. ● Example: 3.6-4.8 ●Students should independently read books in this range. ●Students reading below grade level should read books at the higher end of their Z.P.D..

Z.P.D. and Book Selection ● Teachers should provide students with their Z.P.D. on their media pass or index card to take with them to the media center. ●The Z.P.D. can be listed as a number range or with colored stickers. ●Sticker chart is available from the media center.

AR Colored Sticker Chart

Student Access ● Students should not use the book when taking a quiz. ● Students should be provided with time to take quizzes. ●Students should be provided time to visit the media center or have access to leveled books in a classroom library.

Goals ● Individually set based on the STAR reading test. ● Goals are set in AR using Pre-Populated STAR results. ● Share grading period goals with your students. ● Goals should be adjusted each nine weeks with current STAR test results.

Accuracy ● Students should maintain a quiz average of 85% correct or higher. ●AR provides an “at- risk” report to help identify students working below this level. ●Adjust reading ranges or book length if necessary.

Monitoring ● Students must maintain a reading log of their quiz performance. ●Teachers should monitor student progress. ●Teachers should ensure students are reading books within their Z.P.D.

Grade Span Incentives ● Banner recognizing top class in each grade span. ● Other incentives to be determined later.

Questions or Concerns ● If you have questions about using the programs or setting goals, please see members of the literacy team. ● If you have concerns about the use of this program, please share those with Mr. Lassiter.
