Laws and Acts The New York State park system follows Title 9 New York Codes, Rules and Regulations (NYCRR). This covers many different regulations that make the parks safe and accessible. This document covers everything from free admission into parks for those who are disabled to assigning specific times and permits for hunting to use of vehicles on these lands.

Overseers of the Parks New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation- agency with a variety of facilities. These include parks, historic sites, properties, residences, administration buildings and other supporting infrastructure. Capital Programs Bureau-within State Parks manages new construction and rehabilitation projects of these facilities. New York State Park Police-provide police services consistent with the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's mission-to provide safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities for New York State residents and visitors. The State Council of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation -central advisory body on all matters affecting parks, recreation and historic preservation within their respective regions, with particular focus on the operations of the State Parks and Historic Sites.

Acreage and Number of Types of Land There is 180 State Parks in New York. Along with 37 historic sites and 20 State Park golf courses. The two largest parks in New York State are the Adirondack Sate Park at six million acres and the Catskill State Park at 700,000 acres. Together, they comprise the Forest Preserve.

Adirondack State Park Encompasses one-third of the total land area of New York State. Known for its extensive wild landscapes, which includes tracts of old-growth forest, Wildflowers abound, and hundreds of species of shrubs, herbs and grasses. There are Foot trails extending over 2,000 miles course throughout the park.

Catskill State Park The Catskills contain forested mountains; narrow, winding valleys; rushing streams and rivers. Has some of the best areas for hunting and fishing in New York State. Throughout this park the DEC stocks many of its streams with native fish. This allows for healthy and balanced ecosystems in the park.

Activites There are many activities that can be done in the parks. Hiking, hunting, fishing, bicycling, horseback riding, boating, skiing, snowmobiling, and much more. There are some things that are not permitted though. A few are: using remote controlled boats and cars, fighting, throwing rocks, cursing, spitting, hitchhiking, and gambling.
