Surface Temperature Described scientifically, surface temperature is the radiating temperature of the ground surface including grass, bare soil, roads, sidewalks, buildings, and trees to name a few. Surface temperature can be observed using the electromagnetic spectrum.

Why do We Measure Surface Temperature? Help scientists calculate the rate of heat exchange between the atmosphere and the soil Use as verification for remotely sensed temperature readings

Surface Temperature Instrument Surface temperature is measured with an infrared thermometer

Measuring Surface Temperature Nine sample points are selected with a site of uniform land cover Surface temperature measurements are taken at each of these sample points Snow depth measurements are also taken at each sample point
