Density refers to how much stuff (mass) there is in a given volume. Density= mass/volume
3
Density tells us how tightly matter is packed together If something is packed very tightly together it’s considered to be dense. More dense sinks and pushes up less dense!
4
A way to describe two substances (rock, water, warm air, cool air) to see which weighs more compared to the same amount of the other. In other words, does a bucket of lead weigh more or less than a bucket of popcorn???
5
Weight vs Mass Difference?? Your weight ______ Multiply by.17 for weight on the moon Now multiply by 2.5 for weight on Jupiter
6
Scientists believe Earth got it’s layers because shortly after it formed there was a great deal of heat, causing Earth to melt into semi-solid liquid. More dense materials settle toward the center. (Core) Less dense materials rose toward the surface. (Crust)
7
Today aluminum and silicon, which have low densities, are common in Earth’s crust. Earth’s inner and outer cores are composed mostly of very dense iron.
8
The oceanic crust is made mostly of basalt. The continental crust is made mostly of andesite and granite.
9
Heating the lower mantle causes the material to expand. Since less dense materials float on more dense materials, a convection current develops.
