1
Atmosphere, Weather, & Climate
2
Why does the temperature in the stratosphere increase? Ozone is broken apart by UVB & UVC waves in the upper part of the Stratosphere. O 2 & O are formed in the lower part of the Stratosphere releasing energy.
3
Estimate where the boundaries for each layer of the atmosphere are located by graphing the temperature changes that occur in each layer. UCAR Virtual ballooningUCAR Virtual ballooning 10 30 50 70 90 110 120 km Temperature C°
4
The atmospheric zone where most weather events occur is the Troposphere.
5
What % of insolation reaches the earth’s surface?
6
Explain how warm air at the equator gets distributed to the poles.
7
Explain how the tilt of the earth determines seasons in the Northern & Southern Hemispheres.
8
What hemisphere is this hurricane in? How do you know?
9
Which satellite image was taken during an El Nino event? How do you know?
10
Is this satellite image from an El Nino event from a normal year? How do you know?
11
Draw a diagram that explains how the greenhouse effect works.
12
Describe how global climate change can harm the environment. Increase in temperature causes Increase in insects that defoliate trees Disruption of migratory patterns which in turn can reduce breeding success. Coral bleaching from warmer ocean temperatures
13
Ozone that is harmful is in what layer of the atmosphere ? Troposphere
14
What is planetary albedo?
15
What causes the annual CO 2 levels to oscillate ? Name the seasons and causes.
16
Name two places where methane comes from? One anthropogenic and the other natural.
17
Explain how a cap and trade system works to reduce carbon dioxide The "cap" sets a limit on emissions, which is lowered over time to reduce the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere. The "trade" creates a market for carbon allowances, helping companies innovate in order to meet, or come in under, their allocated limit. The less they emit, the less they pay, so it is in their economic incentive to pollute less.
18
What is the Kyoto Protocol?

24
Create a hypothesis about global climate change from this graph.
25
How could an increase in global temperature cause the great ocean conveyor belt to stop working properly?
26
What are 2 radiative forces that cool the planet? 1 natural, 1 anthropogenic? What are 2 radiative forces that warm the planet? 1 natural, 1 anthropogenic?
27
Why are deserts more likely to form at 30° latitude?
28
Carbon dioxide would be released from animals and enter what part of the atmosphere?
29
Explain why summer months are warmer than the winter months.
