William Pitt was an Australian architect who grew up in St. Kilda and Carlton and he later moved to Abbotsford. His reputation as a famous Melbourne architect is noted as he was involved with the designing of The Federal Coffee Palace, Victoria Brewery, Princess' Theatre, Former Melbourne Stock Exchange, Old Rialto Building and Sir Charles Hotham Hotel. He lived from 1885-1918.

Robert Peck von Hartel Trethowan is an architecture firm which operates in Australia and SE Asia. This company now has over 75 proffesional and support personnel. 8 This building was built by architect, Robert Peck von Hartel Trethowan. It was built in the year 2001. Current use is for residental apartment. The location of this apartment is 30 Spring St. Melbourne. It is a very modern looking building with a slight american look.

The Eureka was built in the years 2002-2006. It opened on 11 of October 2006. It was designed by architect Fender Katsalidis. This residential building measures 300meters high having a total of 91 floors. The name Eureka came from Eureka Stockade.

This residential building was built by architects Bates Smart, Roger Poole and Jeff Copolov. It was built in the year 2001- 2002. It’s located at 250 St Kilda Rd. Southbank. It’s a very luxurious building mostly made with podium bluestone and have a total of 23 floors.

The Freshwater Place is a Residential high-rise located in Southbank. It consists of 60 floors and it is the 2 nd most tallest residential complex in Melbourne. It was constructed in 2005 and apparently it is the thinnest building in Australia and it was made by the architectural firm ‘Bates, Smart and McCutcheon’.

Melbourne architecture has an impact on the three questions. Architecture effects livability by giving Melbournians places to live and, with modern architecture and changing ideas, the quality of Melbourne livability will only improve… if it’s affordable… On a different note, Architecture is also beneficial to the sustainability of or city. But we think not enough of it is being done on this particular level. Sure it’s expensive, but WestWyck managed and they didn’t have as many resources. Developing on this can only improve the quality of Melbourne life.

After all of this research, we still have questions for the trail: › What are some interesting issues/controversies raised in residential Melbourne Architecture? › Are residential buildings in Melbourne affordable? › Is livability different in other neighborhoods? How? › How environmentally sustainable is Melbourne in general? Thank you for listening.
