The Middle Colonies

2. New Netherland Becomes New York
The Dutch set up a colony along the Hudson R.
Land grants given by the king
Patroons were owners of large estates
Mostly Protestants here but allowed others of diff faiths to live here
Peter Stuyvesant, gov of New Netherland
Set up rules for governing

3. New Jersey Separates From New York
NY was huge, so the Duke of York decided to divide
Named NJ in 1664
Proprietary colony is one in which the king gives land to someone in return for a yearly payment
Royal colony is one under direct control of the Eng Crown

4. The Founding of PA Wm Penn founded PA—given by his friend King Chas II
Left Anglican Church and became a Quaker
Quakers were Protestant reformers; Quackers are ducks
Quakers were against war and class differences

5. A Policy of Fairness
Penn wanted this colony to be a refuge for all religions (later Catholics & Jews turned away)
Kind and fair to the Indians
New arrivals were the PA Dutch (Germans)
New city created was Philadelphia
So. of PA a new colony created DE

6. Life in the Middle Colonies
Farming important
Wheat, barley, & rye
Cash crops were those sold for $
Cattles and pigs
Trade w/other colonies and Eng
Economy expanded

7. The Backcountry Many moving W of the Appalachian Mtns
Hard work to clear forests
Indians taught colonists how to survive, grow crops…
Penn was good to the Indians and there was relative peace
