Writing Elements of the Writing Process Focus, Organization, Conventions, Support, Elaboration, Style Across the Curriculum/Content Areas Word Work/Grammar/Vocabulary Will be differentiated and based on common errors Cursive Handwriting – Start in December Various Products friendly letters, summaries, poetry, biographies, narratives

Math Numeration Place Value Addition and Subtraction to 9,999 with and without regrouping Representative Algebra (value of the unknown) Fractions Multiplication/Division – through 12 Geometry Problem Solving Graphing (circle graphs) Measurement FYI-we will begin switching Math classes at the beginning of 2 nd Quarter

Communication The Key To A Successful Year Email- the easiest mode of communication Thursday Folders (sign specific documents and return) Agendas Power School/Parent Portal (you should have received this information the first week of school) Progress Reports will be sent home the last full week of September

Attendance and Tardies Students may enter the classrooms at 7:15am. Anyone entering the classroom after 7:45am is considered tardy. The instructional day ends at 2:45pm. Please schedule all appointments after school hours. Students who attend school regularly and on time are more successful.

Homework Policy Nightly reading – 5 days a week – 20 minutes Up to 20 minutes of additional assignments Placed in agendas daily Student’s RESPONSIBILITY!!! Builds independence and holds them accountable Students should be able to complete assignments with minimal assistance (let me know if something seems way too difficult) Please check for completeness

Grading Scale 100-93 A (excellent performance) 92-85B (very good performance) 84-77C (satisfactory performance) GRADE LEVEL 76-70 D (low performance) 69-0F (unsatisfactory performance) *Transition: a “3” in second grade is equal to 80-100% on the grading scale for grades 3-5 *Grades are earned, not given!

State Assessments EOG = End of Grade Tests –Math and Reading ONLY –Taken during the month of May –Plan vacations accordingly –3 rd Grade is a Gateway Year –Scores will be available on Parent Portal Mclass 3D – formerly DIBELS fluency, comprehension, accuracy

Field Trips WHERE ARE WE GOING? Slim Goodbody – Monday, October 21, 2013 - $13.00 James K. Polk – Wed, January 8-9, 2014 – CMS Funded StarLab – Date TBD– In House – approx $5. Children’s Theatre – Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly – Wednesday, February 5, 2014 – approx $10. VOLUNTEERS: All parent chaperones must be CMS approved volunteers. www.cms.k12.nc.us/volunteer If you have agreed to chaperone: –No siblings –No smoking –CMS Transportation Only –Responsible for paying same fees as children

What Can You Do To Help? Attend your child’s 1 st Quarter Conference–End of October Talk to your child about his/her day Discuss and ask questions about what your child is reading Check Thursday Folders, sign and return Provide a nightly routine/quiet place for homework Sign agendas nightly Provide a regular bedtime and a good breakfast Be on time to school-in the room by 7:30am-ready for instruction by 8:00am Set goals- Expect your child to do his/her best!! Celebrate your child’s successes!!
