ANALIZING THE DEBATE: “Is it Time to Raise the Minimum Wage?” NO LIBRARY VISITS DUE TO TESTING

2 “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” One of the problems in communicating specific ideas is when people label specific items differently. Common Core curriculum is supposed to solve this, but there are still situations where different labels are used. As you move through high school English classes you will sometimes find that different teachers use different labels. You will need to do your best to think it through and adjust. In the tests you are taking next week you will find a similar, same thing different label or same label, different thing.

3 Common Core Labels used in class Labels used on the SBAC test. CLAIM: an opinion being proven or argued using evidence. A claim is the basis of a thesis. Often used to refer to the first sentence of an informative paragraph (topic sentence) or developed into a thesis for an essay.. THESIS: a claim being argued throughout an essay, using supporting claims, warrants and evidence. A SIMPLE THESIS: a claim proven in an essay. A COMPLETE THESIS: a simple claim + the three topic claims which will be used to prove it in the essay written as one sentence. THESIS OR CENTRAL IDEA: an opinion or concept proven in writing using evidence. A label which covers both claim, simple thesis and complete thesis.
