Radical Response Luke 7:36-50

“Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. 37 When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38 and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

Luke 7:36-50 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is — that she is a sinner." 40 Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said.

Luke 7:36-50 41 "Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?" 43 Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said.

Luke 7:36-50 44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven — for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.“

Luke 7:36-50 48 Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50 Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

Radical Problem Our view of salvation affects our spiritual commitment. “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” James 2:10.

Radical Problem Sin affects every human being. Sin affects every human being. Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

Radical Problem Sin affects every human being. Sin affects every human being. Sin begins in the heart and pollutes everything. Sin begins in the heart and pollutes everything. Our sin is fatal. Our sin is fatal. Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”

Radical Problem Sin affects every human being. Sin affects every human being. Sin begins in the heart and pollutes everything. Sin begins in the heart and pollutes everything. Our sin is fatal. Our sin is fatal. “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” Ephesians. 2:1

Radical Salvation We cannot manufacture our own salvation. We cannot manufacture our own salvation. “In the gospel God reveals the depth of our need for him. He shows us that there is absolutely nothing we can do to come to him. We can’t manufacture salvation. We can’t program it. We can’t produce it. We can’t even initiate it. God has to open our eyes, set us free, overcome our evil, and appease his wrath.” (David Platt, Radical, page 32).

Radical Salvation We cannot manufacture our own salvation. We cannot manufacture our own salvation. All life is a gift from God. All life is a gift from God. Jesus bore the cup of wrath. Jesus bore the cup of wrath.

“The ‘cup’ is not a reference to a wooden cross; it is a reference to divine judgment. It is the cup of God’s wrath. This is what Jesus is recoiling from in the garden. All God’s holy wrath toward sin and sinners, stored up since the beginning of the world, is about to be poured out on him, and he is sweating blood at the thought of it.

What happened at the Cross was not primarily about nails being thrust into Jesus’ hands and feet but about the wrath due your sin and my sin being thrust upon his soul. In that holy moment, all the righteous wrath and justice of God due us came rushing down like a torrent on Christ himself...

At the Cross, Christ drank the full cup of the wrath of God, and when he had downed the last drop, he turned the cup over and cried out, ‘It is finished.’ This is the gospel.” (David Platt, Radical, page 35-36)

Radical Response New life gives birth to extreme gratitude. New life gives birth to extreme gratitude. “I invite you to consider with me a proper response to this gospel. Surely more than praying a prayer is involved. Surely more than religious attendance is warranted. Surely this gospel evokes unconditional surrender of all that we are and all that we have to all that he is.” (David Platt, Radical, page 37)

Radical Response New life gives birth to extreme gratitude. New life gives birth to extreme gratitude. Choosing foolish devotion. Choosing foolish devotion. Publicly worshiping Jesus. Publicly worshiping Jesus. Extravagant giving to Jesus. Extravagant giving to Jesus.

Challenge: Sharpen your image of Jesus. “We are giving in to the dangerous temptation to take the Jesus of the Bible and twist him in a version of Jesus we are more comfortable with. A nice, middle-class, American Jesus. A Jesus who doesn’t mind materialism and who would never call us to give away everything we have... A Jesus who brings us comfort and prosperity as we live out our Christian spin on the American dream.” (David Platt, Radical, page 13) (David Platt, Radical, page 13)
