Romans 3 Review and catch up first

Faith produces righteousness! believed(πιστεύω) Jas 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed (πιστεύω) God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ro 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: faith (πίστις) Ga 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith (πίστις), preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. Remember Romans 2:11 being ignorant of God’s righteousness going about to establish their own righteousness Rom 10:3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. THE PROBLEM

Faith produces righteousness by faith 1. Righteousness Ga 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith…6 but faith which worketh by love. sanctified by faith 2. Sanctification Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. justified by faith 3. Justification Ro 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. purifying their hearts by faith. 4. Purification of your heart Ac 15:9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. churches established in the faith 5. Churches establish Ac 16:5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Faith produces 6. Saved through Faith Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:.. your work of faith, and labour of love 7. 1Th 1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; the just shall live by faith 8. Heb 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. propitiation through faith in his blood 9. Ro 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Rom 2:12 Rom 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; Who are those who have sinned without the Law? Who are those who have sinned in the Law? 1Co 9:20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 1Co 9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. Mt 10:15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. Mt 11:24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

Rom 2:13 Rom 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. 14 14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15shew the work of the law written in their hearts, 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) Two Chapters of Romans and Two reasons why Mankind is without excuse before God in judgement. 1.Creation - Romans 1:18-22 2.Conscience - Judeans and Gentiles both have law. 16 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. When?

Rom 2:17 makest thy boast of God, 18knowest approvestinstructed 19confidentart a guide of the blindlight of them which are in darkness20 instructor of the foolishteacher of babes form21 22 23makest thy boast of the law through breaking the law Rom 2:17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, 18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; 19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, 20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. 21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? 22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? 23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? Μόρφωσις = the mere form, semblance 2 Tim 3:5

Rom 2:25 circumcision Rom 2:25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. 26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? (not possible but hypothetically) 27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: the spiritthe letter 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. It’s not your birth and it’s not what you have done!!!

It’s not your birth and it’s not what you have done, circumcision or keeping the Law !!! 1. It’s not the external rites of religion, but the state of the heart. 2. We must die to self and put on Christ for holiness of heart and life. 3. The mere fact that we are born of Christian parents will not save us. 4. No external rite will save us. Baptism will not save us. 5. A mere profession of religion, however orthodox may be our creed, will not save us. 6. Our outward is not the proper measure of our true character and standing.

7. It is a privilege to be in possession of the word of God, and to know our duty. Ec 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 8. It is also a fearful thing to neglect the privileges which we enjoy. We shall be judged according to the light which we have; and it will be an awful event to go to eternity from a Christian environment unprepared. 9. The most wicked of the heathen may meet a far milder doom than many who are externally moral, or who profess Christianity. It is the duty of every individual to be at peace with God, and to flee from the wrath to come.

Rom 3:1 circumcision? Rom 3:1 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 2 2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. 3 3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? 4 justified overcome 4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. Circumcision Ro 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

blessedness faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. Ro 4:9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. How was it then reckoned? Ro 4:10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. Gen 15 Gen 17 he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: Ro 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: Gal 3:6,7,14,16,29 Ro 4:12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. Gen 12:1-3 The blessedness or blessing comes through FAITH!

Gen 15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. What do you have to believe for it to be counted to you for righteousness? Gen 17:9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised….12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised….

1Co 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. faith Ga 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. new creature Ga 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Christ is all, and in all Col 3:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. FAITH, REPENTANCE

4 justified overcome 4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. justified clear Ps 51:4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 2 2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. 3unbelief 3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? justified by faith Ga 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. overcometh the world, even our faith. 1Jo 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5(vs 3 UNBELIEF) 5 But if our unrighteousness (vs 3 UNBELIEF) commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) If God is honoured by sin, than it would be wrong for Him to inflict punishment! righteousness by faith Ga 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. (The first point) 6 6 God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world? Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. Pro 3:11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: 12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

7 7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie (Unbelief, knew God and glorified Him not as God) unto his glory; (God keeping his word revealing that he is God…gave them up, David’s consequences for his sin) why yet am I also judged as a sinner? 8 8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. Ro 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 9 9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

10 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Ps 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Ps 53:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. 2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. 3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. 11 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. What makes someone PROFITABLE?

2Ti 4:11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. Tit 3:8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. Phm 1:11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: 1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. Heb 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. Heb 12:10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

13throattongues lips: 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14mouth 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15feet are swift shed blood 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16misery are in their ways 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17the way of peace have they not known 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18is no fear of God before their eyes 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: tongueshed innocent blood, 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, heart that deviseth wicked imaginationsfeet that be swift 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, speaketh liessoweth discord among brethren. 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

19 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Ga 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Ga 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. Ga 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Ga 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. Ga 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. Ro 10:3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. Gen 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain,…..

Rom 3:21 Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

24justified 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25propitiation 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 righteousness 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

righteousness Rom 5:17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) righteousness justification 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. righteous 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: righteousness 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Ro 3:25 propitiation Ro 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; mercyseat Heb 9:5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat ; of which we cannot now speak particularly. 1) relating to an appeasing or expiating, having placating or expiating force, expiatory; a means of appeasing or expiating, a propitiation 2) used of the cover of the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies, which was sprinkled with the blood of the expiatory victim on the annual day of atonement (this rite signifying that the life of the people, the loss of which they had merited by their sins, was offered to God in the blood as the life of the victim, and that God by this ceremony was appeased and their sins expiated); hence the lid of expiation, the propitiatory

Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

27 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 1 Cor 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

29 Yes, of the Gentiles also 29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: 30 by faiththrough faith 30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. 31 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Mt 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Ga 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Rom 4:1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
