The Devil is known as one of the archangels who disobeyed God and was thrown out of heaven (Luke 10:18) “Jesus answered them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from Heaven.’ In the form of a serpent, Satan tempted Eve to eat the fruit in the Garden of Eden, as well as tempting Jesus to give up his ministry.

Christians believe in a supra-human force of evil, which is the opposite of God which can be referred to as Satan or Lucifer. Life is a battle between the forces of good and evil or, God and the Devil. Christians see life as test in which they have to resist the temptations of Satan. This is like Jesus’ temptation when he was sent into the wilderness immediately after his baptism.

Some believe that Satan was an angel called Lucifer and that he rebelled against God and was thrown out of heaven. As a result, he now seeks revenge by tempting humans away from the will of God. His power, however, is allowed and limited by God. Some (not all) Christians believe that people or places can be possessed by evil and may need to be exorcised by a priest.

In your groups, discuss modern day temptations that lead people to do evil things. You have 6 minutes to complete this task and then each group will give feedback to the rest of the class.

The Devil today Many Christians still chose to live a life of ‘resisting Satan. They ban music, videos and games which they believe contain Satanic ideas. They hold exorcisms to rid people of Satan’s influence. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/1735623.stm Many Christians say that whenever there is suffering in the world, or people choose to do wrong, it is because Satan causes the tragedy or encourages people to do the wrong thing.
