2 DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND MANAGEMENT-ONLINE TRAINING COURSE

3 INTRODUCTION  The 9 week, DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND MANAGEMENT- ONLINE TRAINING COURSE is meant for those participants whose time, resource or logistical constraints may not avail them time to attend the open training normally conducted in a 3 day,8 hour open workshops.  While the open workshop format allows for one to one participant-trainer and participant-participant sharing of information, this online modules provides the trainee with the leeway to engage the trainer exclusively from his/her personal work perspectives which the limitations of a workshop normally curtails.

4 Introduction cont’d  This course normally takes 9 weeks to complete. However, this duration may be reduced or escalated upwards depending on the availability of the trainee to read the materials and submit his/her assignments on time. Once you finish and submit the assigned task, the online trainer will respond to you within 48 hours.

5 Introduction cont’d  After the successful completion of the course, you will be awarded with a certificate with grading in the following order:  80-100 Distinction  65-79 Upper Credit  50-64 Credit  40-49 Pass

6 COURSE CONTENT  The modules spread over an 9 week period with the online trainer sending you materials with accompanying tasks at the beginning of each week for you to hopefully finish and submit the task by the end of the week.

7 NEED FOR THE COURSE  The environments in which projects are conducted expose development workers to various disasters and our understanding of their causes and effects may greatly guide us in the design of both their reduction strategies and/or mitigating mechanisms  Additionally, as senior organization officials, our responsibilities will also include identifying and implementing disaster preparedness and management policies within our organizations

8 Point To Note  The aim of this training is to equip you with a set of new skills to enhance the effective delivery of your functions in your organization, thus answering the two questions below would be necessary for you:  Upon completion of the training, what (more) should know about disaster preparedness and management that I already know?  After the training, what do I expect to do differently?

9 Course objectives Goal: Increased awareness and understanding of Disaster Preparedness and Management among key organization managers to reduce the impact of disasters through the provision of information, tools and instruments, in general and the topics of risk reduction, transfer, and financing in particular.

10 TOPICS WEEK 1:Preliminaries Objective:  Identification of training needs By the end of this session, the participant should correctly list down each of her/his training needs The benefits her/his organization and communities will derive as a result of this training  Task

11 WEEK 2: Introduction to disaster preparedness/overview of disaster preparedness Objective:  By the end of the session, the participants should clearly demonstrate appreciation of the following concepts: Correctly identify characteristics of a disaster Correctly identify the effects of disasters to organizations, programs and communities Correctly identify Common Concepts in disaster management  Task

12 WEEK 3:Disaster Emergency Needs Assessment Objectives:  By the end of the session, the participants should clearly demonstrate appreciation of the following concepts: Use of risk information for emergency planning and preparedness Tools used for conducting vulnerability capacity assessment  Task

13 WEEK 4:Preparedness planning & Coordination/ Management, Direction, and Coordination Objectives:  By the end of the session, the participants should clearly demonstrate appreciation of the following concepts: Correctly identify the key steps in disaster preparedness planning, direction and coordination Identify stakeholders and their roles in disaster risk management DRR advocacy with government  Task

14 WEEK 5: Disaster preparedness measures Objective  By the end of the session, the participants should clearly demonstrate appreciation of the following concepts: Correctly identify disaster classifications Correctly identify risk reduction/coping strategies  Task

15 WEEK 6:Community-Based Disaster Preparedness / Increasing Community Disaster Awareness Objective:  By the end of the session, the participants should clearly demonstrate appreciation of the following concepts: Correctly identify strategies for effective involvement of communities in disaster preparedness measures Demonstrate and appreciation for involving vulnerable communities to reduce likelihood and impact of disasters  Task

16 WEEK 7:Integrating disaster preparedness with other organizational programmes Objective:  By the end of the session, the participants should clearly demonstrate appreciation of the following concepts: Correctly identify opportunities for integration of disaster preparedness activities among organization departments and programs Integrated approach strategies in disaster management  Task

17 WEEK 8:Disaster Programme Information and Reporting Objectives:  By the end of the session, the participants should clearly demonstrate appreciation of the following concepts: Correctly identify strategies for effective disaster information gathering, analysis and reporting Correctly identify strategies for storing and updating of disaster information  Task
