Geography of Language Language is – Very important are of study in Geography system of communication through speech – collection of sounds a group of people understands to have the same meaning.

Spatial characteristics Language is different around the world Helps create cultural regions – Example South America speaks Spanish Brazil(largest South American country speaks Portuguese). This is a linguistic subculture – Language can equal history

Language Family Tree 3,000-6,500 languages are spoken globally – Estimate ½ of the 6,500 that are out there will be lost Dead languages (still spoken, but not changing) Extinct Languages (not spoken)

Languages are divided into families- share common origin Language families are divided into branches Branches may have a variety of dialects – It is a regional variety of a language – Ex: American English and British English
