Lincoln High School Physical Education and Health Course overview Grading Requirements Standards State and Graduation requirements

State Requirements for Physical Education and Health Rhode Island General Law 16-22-4 Instruction in health and physical education (which was amended July 2008) states: 16-22-4. Instruction in health and physical education. -- All children in grades one through twelve (12) attending public schools, or any other schools managed and controlled by the state, shall receive in those schools instruction in health and physical education under rules and regulations the department of elementary and secondary education may prescribe or approve during periods which shall average at least twenty (20) minutes in each school day. No private school or private instruction shall be approved by any school committee for the purposes of chapter 19 of this title as substantially equivalent to that required by law of a child attending a public school in the same city and/or town unless instruction in health and physical education similar to that required in public schools shall be given.

State Requirements for Physical Education and Health Commencing September 1, 2012, the required health education curriculum shall be based on the health education standards of the Rhode Island Health Education Framework: Health Literacy for All Students as promulgated by the Rhode Island department of education and consistent with the mandated health instructional outcomes therein. Commencing September 1, 2012, the required physical education curriculum shall be based on the physical education standards of the Rhode Island Physical Education Framework: Supporting Physically Active Lifestyles through Quality Physical Education as promulgated by the Rhode Island department of education and consistent with the instructional outcomes therein.

LHS Graduation Requirements All students must take Physical Education and Health each school year. (Grades 9-12) You must receiving a passing grade to receive ½ credit per year for a total of 2 credits for graduation

Physical Education Standard 1 A physically educated person: 1.Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms. “I can do many movement skills and a few movement skills very well.”

Physical Education Standard 2 2.Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. “I understand how to perform skills and I can apply this knowledge to improve my skills.”

Physical Education Standard 3 3. Understands the implications of and the benefits derived from involvement in physical activity. “I know why physical activity is good for me and others.”

Physical Education Standard 4 4. Applies physical activity-related skills and concepts to maintain a physically active lifestyle and a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. “ I use the skills and knowledge that I have learned to be physically fit and do healthy physical activities.”

Physical Education Standard 5 5. Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings. “I show respect for others during physical activities.”

Physical Education Standard 6 6. Understands how one’s internal and external environment influences physical activity choices. “I understand how my environment affects my choices and interest in physical activities.”

Uniform Policy All students must have a change of clothes to participate in PE class. Failure to have a proper change of clothes and footwear will result in no participation in class and a loss of credit for the day. Not changing for class does not count as an excused absence in PE.

Uniform and Changing Policy Examples of appropriate clothes include: T-shirts Sweat-shirts Sweat-pants Warm-up pants and jackets Shorts All students must have appropriate foot wear (sneakers) to participate in PE class No flip-flops, sandals, open toe shoes or boots are allowed in PE class activities. No jeans or cut off jeans are allowed in PE class activities. No clothing with inappropriate language, pictures or connotations are allowed

Locker room policies The boys and girls locker room doors will be locked until 7:25. After the first morning bell the doors will be opened for students to change for PE class. The boys and girls locker room doors will be locked after the last student has left the locker room for PE class each period. After the late bell rings for each period the locker room doors will be shut. Any student arriving after the late bell must have a pass. All students must stay in the locker room until the teacher clears the area. All students will report to the gymnasium together for class with the PE teacher. After the PE class is over all students must stay in the locker room. The locker room door will be shut until the dismissal bell for the next period.

Locks and Lockers You will be given a locker and a lock to secure your clothes, books and valuables in the locker room. You are responsible for the lock, if you lose it you will be responsible to pay $5.00 to replace it, just like if you lose a school book. Remember to close and lock your locker each time you use it! Do not move or change your lock/locker

Excused Absences The only absences from class that we allow are: 1. Doctor’s note for illness or injury 2. Absence from school 3. Field trip 4. Guidance appointment If you are on an athletic team you need to participate in Physical Education, academics come before extra curricular activities

Gym policies Food or Drink are not permitted Phones, IPODS and electronic devices are not permitted If the bleachers are closed you may not go on the top row.

Routines All students will take attendance with their designated teacher each period. All students will perform warm-up and stretching activities as part of your grade each day. When passing in the school to the North Gym or Weight room during class you must stay with the class and be quiet. When you sign up for an activity you must stay with the activity for the entire unit.

Fitness Testing You will participate in the fitness gram physical fitness test at the beginning and end of the semester. The fitness testing is 10% of your grade. Do your best, set goals and try to improve your overall fitness and wellness throughout the semester.
