2. Shakespeare’s Theatre: The Globe

3.  Shakespeare needs a new playhouse to rival the opposing theatres.  The Admirals Men have the Rose Playhouse  There was a lack of money to build the play house.

4.  The Lord Chamberlain’s men all chipped in for it.  James and Richard Burbage paid for 50% of it.  The rest of the 4 in the group each paid 12.5%  Opened in 1599

5.  It was built in an outlying district of London named Southwark.  It was built near the Thames River.  Southwark was not a place with a good reputation though.  It attracted people of all classes to it.

6.  The Lord Chamberlain's Men acted in a theatre built by James Burbage in 1576.  So Giles Allen who was the landlord ended up taking all of the materials from the old theatre and making the dome with it.

7.  They technically owned the land but their lease was up soon.  So they were going to buy a new property for theatrical use but then the renegotiated the lease with the landlord.

8.  The Playhouse was a circular three story building with a small straw roof covering a portion of it.  On the third level was a small house supported by columns from the stage where announcements were made and the playhouse's flag.  Held 2000 people but often has 3000 people attend the plays.

9.  There were no backdrops, no lighting, and no props.  Women had to be accompanied by men no matter where they sat.  There was no artificial lighting so the plays generally occurred from 2P.M. to 4-5P.M.

10.  On June 29, 1613 the playhouse was burnt down.  During a performance of Henry VIII A cannon ignited the playhouse.  It was rebuilt on the opposite side of the Thames River.

11.  Closed in 1642 because it was thought to be bigger then the church  The Puritan's then used the land to build tenements.  The theatre was torn down in 1664
