The Southern Colonies were not dominated by a single religion which gave way to more liberal attitudes and some religious freedom.

Abundance of land and a lack of workers led to a need for slaves Indentured servants and slave labor became necessary for plantation owners Slavery was legal in all the colonies by 1700

There were no public schools, and very few private schools available. Rich families would hire private tutors to come to the house or plantation school and teach children
