Objectives of public health training Schools of Public Health train their students to be able to develop, organise, manage, evaluate, and adjust intervention aiming at the promotion of health and at the reduction of present and forecasted public health challenges. Graduates must be able to handle population health problems as well as man-made health systems and other man-made systems with health impact.

Three main cycles of Public Health training Bachelor – 180-240 ECTS credits (3 to 4 years fulltime study) Bologna master – 60 ECTS credits (1 year fulltime, 2 years halftime) Postgraduate Master – 90-120 ECTS credits, (1 to 2 years fulltime study) Doctoral – do not necessarily have credits (3 to 4 years) –Berlin Communique, 2003 –Bergen Communique, 2005

Three major trends in relationship between health labour market and education – an increase in public health capacity and demand within Europe Diversification of professional structures within health care organizations (health economists, sociologists, lawyers, managers) Increased academic content of knowledge by health professions and disciplines – education replaces training(genetics, aging, free market elements...) Internationalization and individualization of professional fields within public health sector. The EU principle of free movement of persons, goods, services and capital. A. Meijer, T. Kuiper

Major challenges – lack of consensus in: Coordination and balance of –Knowledge –Skills –Competencies –Research component –Quality assurance (evaluation) Employment possibilities? Carrier pathways? Performance evaluation?

What role should ASPHER have in: Combination of National accreditation process and ECTS labelling? Developement of Bachelor programs in European Schools of Public Health? Development of new international training programs (courses)? Public health research? Public health practice?

Possible ASPHER activities Ideological support? Leading the development of strategies? Monitoring? Mentoring? Comprehensive programs, modules, summer schools, seminars, training of trainers, lifelong learning? International public health research projects? Performance evaluation? Development of common Internet platform?
