Parts of Speech Parts of Speech We organize grammar into parts of speech. Learning how to use parts of speech will help you build sentences and improve your writing.

There are eight parts of speech:

A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Parts of Speech A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. Person: Your brother is awake. Place: Let’s walk to the park. Thing: The dog jumps high. Idea: My happiness lasted all day.

Parts of Speech A pronoun takes the place of one or more nouns. Some pronouns include I, you, he, she, it, we, and they. José is my friend. He is my friend.

A verb expresses an action or a state of being.
Parts of Speech A verb expresses an action or a state of being. Action: Ivan built a model airplane. State of Being: The airplane is red.

Parts of Speech A preposition shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word in a sentence. The cat slept on the bookcase.

Parts of Speech A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. Coordinating conjunctions include and, but, and or. Tim and Kiya are in my class. I like red apples but not green apples. Would you like a fork or a spoon?

Parts of Speech An interjection expresses emotion. It may stand alone or appear as part of the sentence. Hey, did you see that? Wow! That was amazing.
