Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Art of Communications: Summer ‘07 Bob Schuesler, Andrei Davis and I jointly taught a class on communications. Students read ‘Flatland’, ‘Ways of Seeing’ by John Berger, and ‘A Month in the Country’ by J. L. Clark. They also saw ‘Rashomon’ by Akira Kurosawa, and ‘Lost in Translation’ with Bill Murray and … With that background, students worked in teams to discuss (seminar) and develop self portrait image ideas.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Unpacking: An important Coordinated Studies concept is the idea of ‘Unpacking’ the real meaning behind any story whether its in a book or a movie. From that idea comes the related idea of ‘Packing the story with clues’ about what going on… And to put that packing idea into the Final Assignment Self Portrait photograph.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Packing with Symbols: Both images uses symbols. One is the Colombian flag used as a background. The other uses a huge Christian grave marker integrated into the foreground and the subject.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Packing with Design: Both images use design. One uses the idea of ‘facets’. And the other uses reversal (negative) to tell her story. Both reply on shape breakup.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Take a Chance: On yourself… Both images were created by the same student. One is a Feelings solution and the other is a Thinking solution. Both done very well.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Using the Background: Both images uses the background to tell a story. One uses symbols and the other uses design. The bottom is lit by a soft side light. bottom is lit by a soft side light. The image above is mostly lit by backlight favoring the left side creating an interesting silhouette. And the lighting works well for both stories.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Styles: There is no one correct way of telling your idea. Both images have obviously been digitally enhanced in Photoshop. But the left image is more natural where the right is more stylized.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas From First to Final Comp: Tina started with a soft story idea and weak technique. It went through several serious stages of incremental improvements to end up with a high wow factor shot.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Cornered Cat: Cat’s ‘roughComp’ re- shoot ideas are very good. Both the 3/4-head and the full profile are very good variations. Because Cat is looking out at us on the top, it’s a more ‘connected’ story. The bottom variation is more ‘stylized’, which speaks more of Cat’s dance training background.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Form Follows Function: The default horizon line rule is to get it level, which was done correctly in the previous slide. These images have been rotated clockwise. It was done purposely to add to the tension to the story. Again, composition is not about right or wrong. It’s about whether it works or not. If the rotation does not work for your personal story, then go with the safer previous version.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Packing Story Ideas Use Color: Try out different ideas like rotating as in the previous slide and shifted color bias as in this example. The important thing is that your decisions are solidly grounded in your original story. And that what ever you do is based on your story idea.
