Ireland Education Design and Discovery Electronics Wednesday May 6th 2006 Drumcondra Education Centre

Ireland Education Session 5 Making Machines and Observing Functionality.

Ireland Education Session 5: Making Machines Understanding the session: Exploration of the mechanics of simple machines, this is achieved through a practical based lesson where the student will build different types of “toys” using basic mechanics. Activity A Film Canister Kit Activity B Lego Buggy

Ireland Education Activity 5A: Rolling Kit Challenge!! Make a “Rolling toy which can travel 1-1.5 metres Goal: To allow students to become more familiar with the ideas behind basic mechanics, how energy can be stored, transferred and transformed. Preparation: To do this you will need “One Rolling Kit” per student Materials required: 1 film canister with lid, with holes(8mm – 10mm Ø) drilled in both ends 2 Rubber bands 6.5cm 2 small washers 1 piece of thick drinking straw

Ireland Education Building The “Rolling Kit” Play the video

Ireland Education Simple Machines Opportunity to introduce key concepts  Potential Energy  Kinetic Energy  Conversion of Energy  Friction  Simple Machines

Ireland Education Simple Machines Lever Wedge Wheel and axle Inclined Plane Screw Pulley Gears Linkages Cam and Follower What is a machine? http://www.cosi.org/files/Flash/simpMach/sm1.html Uses a mechanism

Ireland Education Simple Movements Rotary Oscillating Linear Reciprocating

Ireland Education Build the Lego Buggy

Ireland Education Material Class & Properties  Material Classes – metals, ceramics, polymers and composites  The Properties of Materials – strength, density, ductility, electrical and thermal conductivity, optical properties  Material Applications – what are they used for?  Material Choice – what are the best materials to use?  Do Materials Matter? – environmental impact and cost In this session the student learns about

Ireland Education Communication of Ideas Sketches

Ireland Education All stainless steel easier to clean and less risk of food poisoning. Detachable head different heads with different size holes. Rounded top to handle would not stick into hand. Handle pulls off to reveal potato peeler. Snow globe on handle with a festive theme – Christmas market Student Examples of Modifications

Ireland Education The Design Brief Clear statement analysing the design opportunity and how it will be achieved Consideration of the following:  The problem  How it will be used?  Who will use it?  Ergonomic Factors  Safety Factors  Cost  Limitations

Ireland Education The Design Brief Example Design and manufacture a novelty desk tidy that incorporates a fan, suitable for a 6-8 year child

Ireland Education The Design Brief Folder  The design brief  Analysis of chosen brief  Research and investigation  Generation of ideas (at least three) include sketches  Selection of solution  Working drawings  Manufacture order  Material list and costs  Testing and evaluation
