Definition: Continuing medical education (CME) refers to a specific form of continuing education (CE) that helps those in the medical and health field to maintain competence and learn about new and developing areas of their field. These activities may take place as live events, written publications, online programs, audio, video, or other electronic media.

Chapter IV(6); The M&HC Act 2002 states that no medical or health person except those registered under this Act may practice in the country. The BMHC Regulation 2005; (21.1) For re-certification, all medical and health professionals must have at least 30 hours of CME to be eligible for re-certification, in five years time.

CME Guidelines-2009 Mission Statement The mission of CME is to provide a comprehensive education programme for the purpose of maintaining the healthcare providers up-to-date in clinical and research areas in order to foster highest quality of patient care. Renewal of registration will be done upon fulfillment of 30 CME credits in five years for active clinical practice and 15 CME credits for those not active in clinical practice but wish to remain registered with BMHC.

To provide self assessment and life long learning for health care providers. To offer educational resources to all registered medical and health professionals in Bhutan to update and enhance their clinical competency in their relevant fields. To provide quality patient care and clinical services.

To offer CME activities based on identified learners’ needs and deficiencies. To design and meet CME activities to meet the stated learning objectives. To present CME activities that enhances inter- disciplinary synergy of health professionals. To provide CME experience in knowledge, attitude and behavioral skills that results in improved clinical performance and professional development.

The CME activities would be planned and designed to meet the professional and practice- related needs of all categories of medical and health professionals registered with BMHC
