Four special situations when using an AED: 1.Hairy chest—press down firmly on pads, shave chest, or rip hair off with sticky pads (ouch ) 2.Wet/water—move away from water and dry victim off 3.Pacemaker—place pads 1 to 2 inches away from pacemaker. 4.Medicine patch—remove patch or place pads 1 to 2 inches away from patch Extra (child wait—adult now)

2-person CPR & AED Key Points: Person # 1 (first person on the scene) is responsible for checking the victim and breathing Person # 2 (Phone 911, get an AED, & operate the AED), Person # 3 and Person # 4 (compressions) Child (1-8) 5 sets 30:2, then use AED Infant (birth to 1) 5 sets 30:2, then use AED Adult (8 and up) Use AED immediately Remember the 4 universal steps to using an AED—turn it on, attach pads, analyze heart rhythm, and deliver shock. Take heed of the four special situations (hairy chest, wet/water, pacemaker, and medicine patch) and know what to do Remember to clear everyone while the AED analyzes the heart rhythm and before you deliver a shock. After delivery of the shock, do 5 cycles of 30 compressions and two breaths. Repeat if necessary.

AED Scenarios 1. A 53 year-old male with a hairy chest has a heart attack and collapses while mowing his lawn. Show what you would do. 2. A 32 year-old female with a medicine patch goes into cardiac arrest while at the mall with her children. Show what you would do. 3. A 5 year-old child drowns while at the local pool and he’s covered with water. Show what you would do. 4. A 7 year-old child with a pacemaker goes into cardiac arrest while riding his bike in the street. Show what you would do. 5. A 3 year-old child with a pacemaker suddenly collapses and stops breathing. Show what you would do. 6. A 75 year-old sasquatch with a wet, hairy chest, medicine patch, and a pacemaker suffers from a stroke while at the grocery store. Show what you would do.
