2. Homonyms Homonyms are words that sound the same, and are spelled the same, but have different meanings. Example: Stalk 1. The corn stalk is tall. 2. Paparazzi stalk famous people. Homo = same Nym = name

3. Ambiguity A word, a phrase, or a sentence is ambiguous when it has more than one sense that are not synonyms of each other. A sentence is ambiguous if it has two or more paraphrase which are not themselves paraphrases of each other.

Two kinds of ambiguity Lexical ambiguity Any ambiguity resulting from the ambiguity of a word Example : trunk is synonymous with elephant’s nose and with chest but the two are not synonyms Grammatical / structural ambiguity Any ambiguity resulting from the relationship of a word to each other in different ways, even though none of the individual words are ambiguous Example : Flying plane can be dangerous
