Coach Emery Metabolism and Calorie Intake
2
Metabolism Metabolism is a series of chemical reactions that occur in the body’s cells. Metabolism changes the fuel in the food we eat into the energy that the body needs to move, think, and grow. When we eat plants and other foods, we take in the energy that those objects received through photosynthesis. The food is them broken down into amino acids, fatty acids, and sugars. The compounds are then absorbed into the blood and transported to different cells. The energy within the cells are then released for immediate use or stored in the body’s tissues. When your metabolism is high, the body works quickly to convert and utilize the energy from foods. Low metabolism slow the process of converting foods to energy and allows for the fat from the food to collect in the body.

Calorie Intake Calories are energy that fuels the body. Without the proper number of calories, the body’s organs would not be able to function properly. When we eat plants and other foods, we take in the energy that those objects received through photosynthesis. When you eat too many calories (more than your body requires each day), you will begin to gain weight. School-age Children require about 1,600 to 2,500 calories per day. Calorie intake is based on size, amount of activity, and the child’s health.

Foods that Boost Metabolism Blueberries- contain antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent a build up of harmful molecules to cells in the body. Almonds- contains “GOOD” calories and fiber (helps to keep the body full). Whey Protein- helps provide tools to produce amino acids to build muscle. Salmon- Good source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and a number of vitamins. Oatmeal- contains a lot of fiber (which makes the body feel full). Contains vitamin E, zinc, selenium, iron, and magnesium, Great source of protein. Spinach- provides a great number of nutrients. Protects against osteoporosis, colon cancer, arthritis, and many other diseases. Turkey- low in fat, contains Vitamins B, B1, B6, zinc, and potassium. High in protein which allows for the body to lose fat and build muscle.
