2 PhytElleTM A superior formulation to support women’s health. The special combination of plant extracts and herbs offers relief from symptoms associated with PMS, perimenopause and menopause. In other words – for everything you ever wanted to know about PMS and other women’s stuff but were too afraid to ask…

3 Back to basics Hormones are: Chemicals secreted by glands.
They relay signals from cell to cell. Affect different organs. Can trigger physical symptoms and alter mood. The ovaries produce female sex hormones. For women, the main sex hormones are oestrogen and progesterone. Cells send messages between each other using hormones Hormones affect not only the cell, but the tissues, organs and the whole body. Even slight fluctuations in the amount or type of hormones produced by the body can trigger big changes including mood changes. The ovaries (the glands where a woman produces eggs) produce oestrogen.

4 Hormonal ups and hormonal downs
Are a fact of life for women at every age and every stage. Can be pre-menstrual i.e. premenstrual syndrome (PMS), peri-menopausal and menopausal. The major hormones that affect women are oestrogen and progesterone. The monthly fluctuations in these hormonal levels trigger menstruation and are perfectly normal. For some women, the fluctuations can also trigger symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Most women experience PMS – the symptoms are different for every woman and can range from slight tension to extreme tearfulness. Hormonal imbalances towards the end of a woman’s reproductive life, the peri-menopause and the menopause, can also trigger unwanted symptoms like hot flushes.

5 PMS Menstrual symptoms and PMS affect most women
Physical (swelling, bloating, headaches) Behavioural (sleep disturbances, appetite changes, poor concentration) Emotional (irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression) There are over 150 recognised symptoms – e.g. tiredness and irritability which can occur to a greater or lesser degree between different women and Around 80 per cent of women experience menstrual symptoms and symptoms also vary month to month. Studies link the symptoms of PMS to high levels of oestrogen in a woman’s body before and during menstruation

6 Menopause Menopause is natural and normal but may be associated with unpleasant symptoms. From hot flushes, mood swings and insomnia to night sweats and headaches. Symptoms can last for a decade! With menopause, the ovaries gradually produce less and less oestrogen. The falling and fluctuating levels of female hormones means that the way that cells ‘talk to each other’ is affected. It is thought to trigger a disorder in thermoregulation (the methods that the body uses to control and regulate body temperature). This results in overheating, flushing and sweating. The exact way in which the changing hormone levels affect thermoregulation isn’t fully understood but one theory is that falling levels of oestrogen put the body’s temperature regulation system out of kilter. Mistakenly thinking the body is overheating, blood flow is boosted to the skin to allow heat loss. The result is intense heat, accompanied by red, blotchy skin and a racing heart. Some of the symptoms of menopause can actually begin years before menstrual periods stop. Recent research published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology in May 2011, suggests unpleasant symptoms could last for ten years or more. Menopause begins anywhere between the mid forties and the mid fifties. A woman’s ovaries gradually produce less and less of the female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone, and this eventually leads to the ending of menstruation. A woman is menopausal when she hasn’t had a period for a year or so. The transition period is called peri-menopause and it is still possible to get pregnant during peri-menopause because although menstruation is less predictable, the ovaries still produce female sex hormones. 7 So what can you do? Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
Lifestyle factors Plant foods, plants and herbs Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) involves taking hormones in the form of tablets or patches prescribed by a doctor. Can be very effective at relieving the symptoms of menopause if they are particularly distressing. Side effects such as an increased risk of some cancers and stroke have been reported. Others prefer a more natural approach using plant products to reduce unwanted symptoms. In traditional diets in the far East, women are known to experience much lesser symptoms of PMS or menopause, which is attributed to the phytoestrogen content they consume. Now what are these phytoestrogens…

8 Phytoestrogens Phytoestrogens are literally ‘plant oestrogen’
There are a number of types of phytoestrogens In soy, the main phytoestrogens are soy isoflavones Isoflavones have antioxidant properties The term ‘phyto’ means plant and oestrogen means, unsurprisingly, oestrogen. Phytoestrogens have week Scientific interest in phytoestrogens (or plant oestrogens) was sparked relatively recently when researchers noticed that women in Asian countries had far fewer symptoms of menopause compared with women in western countries. They suggested that a major reason for this could be the larger quantities of phytoestrogens and other plant chemicals eaten as part of traditional eastern diets. The traditional far eastern diet is rich in plant proteins – it is estimated that Asian women consume 20-80mg of isoflavones daily compared to less than 5mg per day for western-type diets. Scientists have found that both men and women who have a high proportion of soya in their diets may have a reduced incidence of certain cancers.

9 How phytoestrogens work
When consumed, phytoestrogens bind to oestrogen receptors on target tissues. Phytoestrogens can promote some of the same effects as human oestrogen because they have a similar chemical structure Phytoestrogens bind onto the sites on a cell that oestrogen can bind to. Because they have a similar structure to naturally produced oestrogen, phytoestrogens can have a similar effect. Or, they can compete with naturally produced oestrogen to lower body levels.

10 How phytoestrogens work
When oestrogen levels are high (as in PMS), phytoestrogens compete with naturally produced oestrogen to lower oestrogen production. When oestrogen levels are low (as in menopause), phytoestrogens bind mimic natural oestrogen so the body thinks there is more circulating oestrogen. Phytoestrogens bind onto sites on a cell. If oestrogen levels are high (as in PMS), the phytoestrogen competes with naturally-produced oestrogen. In this way, phytoestrogens may act as an ‘anti-oestrogen’ by counteracting the effects of the body’s natural oestrogen. Consuming soya protein (specifically isoflavones) can reduce premenstrual swelling, cramps, headaches and breast tenderness according to research from The Institute of Psychological Sciences, Leeds University UK. If oestrogen levels are low (peri-menopausal and menopausal women) phytoestrogens have a mild oestrogen-like effect. So, the body thinks it has more oestrogen which stabilises cells, tissues and the body.

11 Recommendation Before medical treatments, the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) recommends first considering lifestyle changes, either alone or combined with a non-prescription remedy, such as dietary isoflavones/black cohosh. Eat a healthy, mixed diet – go for two and five portions of fruit and veggies daily; Exercise regularly – physical exercise reduces the frequency and severity of hot flushes and regular exercise significantly improves emotional and physical wellbeing. Exercise also burns calories so you can help to control and/or maintain a healthy weight and a more toned shape.

13 Active botanicals Black cohosh – an effective botanical for relief of vasomotor symptoms. Dong quai – combined with other herbs, it is often used to treat painful periods. Liquorice root – used in TCM as ‘Qi’ tonic, and as an anti-inflammatory. Chasteberry – may help improve PMS symptoms. Black cohosh – traditionally used to ease symptoms relating to menstrual problems, inflammation of the uterus or ovaries, it appears to be one of the most effective botanicals for relief of vasomotor symptoms. Dong quai – sometimes called the female ginseng, dong quai has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Combined with other herbs, it is most often used to treat painful periods and to improve circulation plus the US National Institutes of Health cites its use for PMS and menopausal symptoms too. Liquorice root – liquorice is used in traditional Chinese medicine as ‘Qi’ tonic, and has been used as anti-inflammatory agent. Chasteberry – one study published in the prestigious British Medical Journal showed significant improvement in PMS symptoms when using chasteberry extract over three menstrual cycles

14 Isoflavone content Three daily tablets of PhytElle provide over 40mg of soy isoflavones – equivalent to two to three meals that contain legumes. Three daily tablets of PhytElle contain 42 mg of isoflavones which is equivalent to consuming two or three legume-based meals. Around 40mg of isoflavones daily is approximately equivalent to the daily amount that men and women in Latin America and Asia eat daily. PhytElle should be taken at regular intervals throughout the day because your body can’t store phytoestrogens, so taking them throughout the day helps to keep levels topped up.
