Find out who you’re teaching. Set the tone for the lesson. Introduce the topic. This can be done with a simple explanation or though a fun attention-grabbing statement or demonstration.

Example Today I am going to discuss feeding principles. We will be discussing feeding rules, their effect on a horse’s digestive system and easy ways to remember and apply these rules. We will then finish with a game to review what you’ve learned.

Tips for Success Establish the knowledge level of your students before you begin. Never assume your students know what you mean, ask first, “Who knows what… is?” etc. Have as many demonstrations/points as you need.

Practice with a clock. Keep explanations /demonstrations short, simple and geared toward the level of the students you’re teaching Use visual aids – even for mounted lessons Involve the students with discussion, questions, as volunteers for demonstrations Be Professional – avoid filler terms, dress for success, stay on schedule
