WW1 Weapons - Planes Abryanna Hernandez, Jessica Metz, Christina Misiur, Miles Goitia
2
Development of Planes ● Wright Brothers - 11 years before the war ● Realized military potential ● Countries fought to build upon improvements
3
Initial Thoughts on Planes ● Planes = useless for war ● No imagination = simple planes ● Inventors were not making “war machines”
4
How Planes Were Used ● Examining the ground from above ( Examples: Allies attacked gap in German lines) ● Bomber Planes ● Fighter Planes
5
Evolution of Fighting Techniques ● Fighting in the air ● Light wieght bombs → Faster and Heavier bombs ● Mounted machine guns interpreter - sync guns and propeller (Germans)
6
Impact of the war as a whole ● France, Russia, Great Britian ● United States were least prepared ● Competition- who could make a better war plane
7
WW1 planes
8
advantages of weapons -air craft helped get a better view of the enemy -used for spying -easy to bomb the trenches -helped quickly transport the men
9
disadvantages of weapon -accidentally blow off own propellers -the pilots had short life expectancies -Technology wasn’t advanced therefore it was usually unsafe -people were inexperienced with the planes which led most of them to be experiments -there was no aerospace medicine -weather made a serious impact
10
How has the weapon improved upon since WWI? ●WWI had biplanes, before WWII occurred we learned new technology and switched over to monoplanes ●mono - one wing ●bi - two wings
11
More Improvements ●WWII allowed planes to fly at night ●the first aircraft only needed to watch over the war and report on enemies ●first pilots unarmed ●as wars progressed carried handbombs, pistols and firearms

Interesting facts ❏ There were approximately 70 different types of planes in World War 1. ❏ WW1 pilots used to use pistols and carbines in air to air combat before guns were installed on planes ❏ In WW1 British and American fighter pilots were never issued any parachutes because they were considered cowardly.
14
Interesting facts ❏ Ormer Locklear, a WW1 pilot, got out of his plane diagnosed a problem, and repaired it all while still flying the plane. ❏ WW1 planes used castor oil as engine lubricant and the pilots suffered from persistent diarrhea sure to inhaling unburnt castor oil coming out of the exhaust.
