IP Video Troubleshooting Situation  Customer, Independent Telco in Woodlands Texas, deploying DTV to their customers  1 HDTV Stream, 2 SDTV Stream, VoIP and HSI  Bandwidth requirements (all streams MPEG4 encoding)  HDTV 6MB  SDTV 2MBx2=4MB  VoIP=1MB  HSI (High Speed Internet) Best Effort up to 5MB  PROBLEM : Tiling, Pixilation, Complete loss of picture, not related to time of day, echo on VoIP transmission. Telco had spent 100 man hours troubleshooting this issue without success  Telco already verified CO is good, and premise is good. Problem is in outside plant but where, how do we troubleshoot (find and fix)?  Modem Trains up with DSLAM at 16MB (capped at 16MB) with 8 db noise margin, but lots of CRC errors! (way too many)  End User Customer ready to disconnect!  Loop Stats ; Approximately 6000 feet 24 gauge PIC all buried, 1200 Pair Cable

LB is too low for Digital Video Should be minimum 70 db. Also Resistive Imbalance = noise. We could find and fix Resistance imbalance, but lets see what else we find out first Remote Hut (DSLAM) (disconnect) DSLAM

Examine OSP Cable Plant drawings and services assignments. Are there interferer HDSL circuits close by? Where, what type, how many P1P2 P3 Remote Hut (DSLAM) (disconnect) DSLAM

Cable Plant records reveal HDSL4 Circuits right next to our IPTV Pair! Examine records to find candidate pairs Farther away that are quieter! Also where to cutover P1,2 or 3 (cable schematics show P2 P1P2 P3 Our HD/SD Video Circuit Several HDSL4 circuits! Cable records indicate Candidate “quiet” vacant Pairs, lets test some Our 1200 Pair cable from Remote Hut Remote Hut (DSLAM) (disconnect) DSLAM

FED III Shield/Ground Tip Ring 3M FED-II Pair 1 Customer Premise- disconnect from Prem. Cable Plant records reveal HDSL4 Circuits right next to our IPTV Pair! Examine records to find candidate pairs farther away that are quieter! Also where to cutover P1,2 or 3 (cable schematics show P2, lets put another FED at the Prem. and go to P2 to test. We can now look both ways from P2 location. P1P2 P3 Our HD/SD Video Circuit Several HDSL4 circuits! Our 1200 Pair cable from Remote Hut Cable records indicate Candidate “quiet” vacant Pairs, lets test some 965AMS Pro2 Remote Hut (DSLAM) (disconnect) DSLAM
