Section 8-2 Apply Exponent Properties Involving Quotients
2
Quotient of Powers Property
● To divide powers having the same base, SUBTRACT the exponents. Example: 47 = = 45 42 Power of a Quotient Property ● To find a power of a quotient, find the power of the numerator and the power of the denominator and divide. Example: = 37
3
Division of Powers: Can think of division of powers as the following if confused: a5 a3 a• a •a •a •a a • a • a = = a2
4
Example 1 Use the quotient of powers property: 912 = 95 (-2)4 = (-2)3
912 = 95 (-2)4 = (-2)3 63 • 64 = 62 1 • r8 = r5 = 97 (-2)4 - 3 = (-2)1 = -2 = 62 67 = 62 = 65 r3 r8 = r5 r8-5 = 1
5
Example 2 Use the power of a quotient property: c 6 = d 2. -2 4 = y c6
= y c6 d6 (-2)4 = y4 16 y4
6
Example 3 Use properties of exponents: 3a4 3= 5b 2. x3 7 • 1 = y 3x8
