7. Festivals Emancipation Day On 22 March the abolishment of slavery took place on the island in 1873. At this time the island was still a Spanish colony. Memorial Day Held in May, this day commemorates those who lost their lives in the World Wars, with Puerto Rican placing wreaths at monuments across the island and hosting military ceremonies.

Men and women used paints to decorate their bodies and wore jewelry made from bones, rocks, feathers and coral. By contrast, the Spaniards who first arrived in Puerto Rico wore full uniforms despite the island's extreme heat and humidity.

12. Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. It is a lovely museum, with the ground floor devoted to classic art work. One wing contains a gallery with paintings, wood carvings and religious articles from the 17th to 19th centuries. The opposite wing’s gallery has more recent works from 1930-1960. There is also a nice museum gift shop. Upstairs, there is a gallery that has artwork from 1950-1990. There are also a number of galleries that had paintings and other works that were more contemporary. These exhibits change through out the year. In the basement, there are craft workshop areas for children, where they can take classes and create their own art.
