GETTING STARTED This course selection guide will walk you through selecting courses for your first semester here at NC State. 1.Using this guide, you will select your fall courses, including Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Life Science courses. Most students will take 15- 16 total credit hours during fall semester. 2. This guide will NOT keep track of your course selections. You need to keep your own list. 4. BIOLOGY START First, you will choose your biology course. Do you have AP or transfer credit for Biology? YesYes, I have AP or transfer credit for Biology. AP Biology test scores of 4 or 5 result in NC State credit for BIO 181 and BIO 183. 5. BIOLOGY If you have AP or transfer credit for BIO 181 and 183, you have several options (in no particular order): Option 1: Though you have credit, you may still wish to take BIO 181 or 183 (and lab) as a refresher. Option 2: Take a course that fulfills a General Education Program (GEP) requirement. Examples include psychology, anthropology, economics, literature, Africana studies, history, communications, etc. FYI courses, which have small class sizes, are a good option to consider.FYI courses Option 3: Take ENG 101. This is a first-year requirement for all majors at NC State. 15. CHEMISTRY A score in the 15-18 range on the NC State Chemistry Placement Test indicates the need to improve your understanding of high school chemistry before enrolling in CH 101 at NC State. We have found that students who score in this range struggle more in this tough chemistry course and rarely are able to earn a strong grade in it. LSC 103 and options All students entering the Life Science First Year curriculum are required to enroll in one course (1 cr) designed to facilitate the transition from high school to university, as well as the transition from LSFY to the major of their choice. HES (formerly PE) All NC State students are required to take one 100-level Health & Exercise Studies (HES) course and one additional HES course as part of the General Education Program at NC State. You may take these courses in any order (i.e., it is not necessary to complete a 100-level HES course prior to taking a higher level HES course). Many students choose to take their health courses for credit only. Health courses taken for credit only will still count towards your degree requirements. 37. MYPACK PORTAL You are responsible for enrolling in classes each semester, including for this coming Fall. To help you learn the system, you should explore the “Enhanced Enrollment Guide” pdf tutorial prior to searching for and enrolling in classes. This and other tutorials can be found on the Registration and Records website.Enhanced Enrollment GuideRegistration and Records Before you can enroll for the fall, you must complete the short survey found at the end of this enrollment guide. Once you submit the survey, an advisor will be notified to release your advising hold (usually within 1-2 business days). Once you submit the survey, please allow 1-2 business days for us to release your advising hold, making it possible for you to enroll beginning June 9 th.
