5 Present findings Clinical Trials Patients with various periodontal diseases, gingivitis, periodontitis, and pregnancy gingivitis, were locally treated with a culture supernatant of a L. acidophilus strain. 6 Present findings Clinical Trials Krasse and colleagues assessed the beneficial effect of L. reuteri against gingivitis. After 14 days of ingesting the probiotic incorporated into chewing gum, the oral cavity of patients with a moderate to severe form of gingivitis had been colonized by L. reuteri and the plaque index had been reduced. 8 Present findings Clinical Trials Riccia studied the anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus brevis in a group of patients with chronic periodontitis. The treatment, which involved sucking on lozenges containing L. brevis over a period of 4 days, led to improvements in the targeted clinical parameters and a significant reduction in salivary levels of prostaglandinE2 (PGE2) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) was also observed. 9 Clinical Trials Shimauchi H and Mayanagi G evaluated the effect of probiotic with Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 on the periodontal condition of volunteers without severe periodontitis. The results indicated that, oral administration of probiotic lactobacilli reduced the numerical sum of periodontopathic bacteria, improved periodontal clinical parameters and decreased slivary Lf level of smokers.
