A Mental Health Strategy for Scotland Strategy set’s out an ambitious work plan for SG and its partners Integrated Commitments - challenging and measurable It will not commit to improve all aspects of the system - but where commitments are made SG will deliver on by 2015

Consultation Process The consultation on the new Mental Health Strategy ran from September 2011-January 2012 Part of NHS HS MHI regional support programme Wide spread of engagement and feedback to government Ensure promotion of wellbeing and prevention of MH problems featured highly Over 400+ responses from local areas and national partners received Emerging themes paper published – end of March 2012 Framework – activities/actions

Emerging Themes Paper Sets out Scottish Governments emerging thinking after the consultation process Thoughts may have moved on Not a comprehensive statement of all that will be in the strategy States that the strategy will cover mental health services and mental health improvement

Headline Themes work more effectively with families and carers embed more peer to peer work and support increase the support for self management and behavioural approaches

extend the anti-stigma agenda forward to focus more on discrimination develop the outcomes approach to include, personal, social and clinical outcomes

Key Priorities crisis and first contact services parenting programmes – evidence based trauma services and services for those with developmental disorders mental health of offenders mental health and employment

mental health and alcohol services patient safety approaches new technologies infant mental health communities and individuals

Food for thought… Strategy will be published at the end of June Integrated How do we ensure that promotion/prevention/care and treatment is balanced? Partnership – NHS focused How do we ensure a wide range of partners continue to engage?

Key Messages Mental Health Improvement is EVERYONE’S business There is no health without mental health Mental health is important to us all, and effects every aspect of our lives
