What is a good format for a resume? A resume should be clear, polished, and concise. You do not want to get overly creative with the format of your resume and clutter it.

How is a resume used? Resumes are submitted to employers either electronically or in person Based on your resume, the employer will decide if they would like to invite you for an interview Resumes can be used as brag sheets for college/letters of recommendation

Parts of a Resume 1. Personal Contact Information 2. Job Objective (Optional) 3. Education 4. Work Experience 5. Volunteer/Community Service Experiences 6. Skills 7. Other activities, awards, honors

Contact Information Name – larger font size (brand yourself) Address, phone number, and a professional email address No personal information (height, weight, etc) unless you are applying for a dance, acting, or athletic position Tips: Create a professional email address Create a professional voice mail

2. Job Objective (Optional) State it clearly & concisely (never over 2 lines) Bad Examples: 1. I want a good job that helps me pay for college. 2. Seeking a position in customer service. Better Example: Seeking a administrative position that will value my leadership, and communication skills

2. Start every bullet point with action verbs Achieved Adapted Advised Analyzed Assisted Built Completed Coordinated Counseled Created Decided Delivered Designed Developed Directed Employed Established Evaluated 1. Have 2-5 bullet points per position

3. Watch out for tenses (past/present) Advised vs Advise 4. Focus on ACHIEVEMENTS, not tasks! Bad: Participated in student government Better: Executed student government outreach activities including creating flyers and distributing marketing materials resulting in an increased student participation

5. Include quantitative data whenever possible 1. Served a population of over 100 students… 2. Created a portfolio of over 50 photographs for …. 3.
