ISMAR (Istituto di Scienze del Mare) is a multidisciplinary institute of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), covering many marine topics: physical oceanography, marine geology, chemistry, biology and fishery. ISMAR section of La Spezia has a long experience on physical oceanography, mainly addressed to experimental studies. At the present, exchange monitoring of water masses through the Sicily Strait and the Corsica Channel is maintained together with oceanographic cruises covering large part of the Mediterranean basin.
3
Example of oceanographic cruise * * * current (April – May 2005)
4
Oceanographic facilities and expertise -Availability of R/V URANIA -Oceanographic instruments (hydrographic probes, current meters,…) -Technical staff with a large experience on the sea: - mooring assembly, deployment, recovery - Hydrographic measurements - Water sampling acquisition and chemical analysis
5
In the frame of KM3net CNR-ISMAR will contribute to: - Oceanographic characterization of deep sea (WP5) - Development of a model for long-term measurements addressed to climate change studies (WP9)
6
Oceanographic characterization of deep sea (WP5) CNR-ISMAR will provide: - physical oceanographic conditions: - Current variability - Hydrographic characteristics - Tests on corrosion
7
Planed Investigations -Hydrographic conditions Periodic surveys along a defined grid from the surface to the bottom. -Current measurements Long-term monitoring for defining space and time variability of the current field in the region. - Corrosion tests One or two sample cages will be deployed in the currentmeter mooring, containing 96 samples.
8
Details on the deployment will be defined after a deep analysis of existing information. A preliminary hydrographic/current survey is going on during this month. The intent is to acquire preliminary information on space variability.
