1 Clinical Orientation

2 Scrubs and Appearance Scrubs should be: ●clean ●free of wrinkles ●matching ●fit properly ●Hair back (bangs too) Shoes should be: ●clean ●comfortable ●high quality ●closed-toe

3 Scrubs and Appearance Watch: ●Digital or second hand Badge: ●Wear on scrub top on side of collar Jewelry: one small set of pierced ears only ●Keep fingernails short, smooth, and clean ●No artificial nails or colored nail polish

4 Cell Phone Policy

5 Be Prepared ●Eat breakfast before a.m. shift ●Eat a snack or meal before p.m. shift ●Bring a meal with you to clinical ●No leaving facility during break

6 Be Prepared Bring the following to every clinical: ●Blue “CNA Clinical Skills” Paper ●Gold Clinical Evaluation Form ●Purple Facility Evaluation Paper

7 Blue “CNA Clinical Skills” Paper This paper is worth 120 points. ●If you lose this your instructor will give you a white one (- 60 points). The white paper you will have to get completely filled out by the last clinical.

8 Blue “CNA Clinical Skills” Paper Do not wait until the last clinical to fill this out. ●If you do not have the opportunity to perform a skill let your instructor know the last clinical (at beginning and middle of shift). The paper has to be completely passed off by the last clinical in order to take state test.

9 Gold Clinical Evaluation Form What you are being evaluated on: Professional Appearance Attendance Willingness to work Ability to perform skills Positive attitude

11 When to arrive to clinicals You need to be in the building in the designated meeting spot 15 minutes prior to the clinical time. That does not mean in the parking lot or the front door. If you are late: go to the designated meeting spot and the nursing instructor will come and get you after she assigns the other students to their CNA. If you are more than 15 minutes late. Call your teacher immediately.

12 Your Clinical Instructor ●Is a Registered Nurse ●They work for the school district as a Clinical Instructor ●Many of them work in hospitals or other nursing facilities as an RN ●They will be there the entire shift ●Report any problems to them ●They are there to help you succeed!!

13 Clinical Assignments ●Your instructor will assign you with a CNA ●You will stay with this CNA the entire shift unless otherwise instructed by your Clinical Instructor ●Be friendly and introduce yourself to the CNA. Work hard and do not put your hands in your pockets!

14 What to expect for an 8 hour shift Day Shift: -start a.m.cares -breakfast -showers -vital signs -toileting - lunch -toileting -charting -Post Conference Evening Shift - showers -toileting -vital signs -snacks -Post Conference -dinner -p.m./HS cares -charting

15 Lunch/Dinner Break - ½ hour break ●You will take this at the same time as CNA unless otherwise instructed by Clinical Instructor At this time you can: ●Eat your meal ●Sit and relax ●Chat with CNA’s or other students ●Go to the bathroom

16 Intake and Output You are allowed to go to the bathroom throughout the shift. Let your CNA know where you are going You need to drink water during your shift. -bring a water bottle - water cups at the nurses medication carts.

17 Rules and Expectations you must follow ●Stay with your CNA ●Participate in care ●Ask questions ●Pass of blue skills sheet ●Communicate with residents ●Stay within scope of practice (as NA and student) ●Do not do any procedure on your own ●Report problems to your clinical Instructor ●Be positive, caring, and smile!!

18 Examples of problems to report to your Clinical Instructor ●CNA is doing things out of their scope of practice ●CNA is asking you to do things out of your scope of practice ●CNA is not allowing you to participate in care ●CNA or other caregivers are abusive to residents (report immediately!) ●CNA keeps leaving you or is constantly going out for a smoke

19 How to find your clinical instructor Tell your CNA where you are going and when you will be back. Go to: 1.Instructors designated area 2.walk hallway 3.ask the nurse **Clinical Instructor will show you their designated area at beginning of shift

20 How to communicate with residents -Introduce yourself when entering the room -Ask them questions about what their interests are -Ask them about things you see in their room -Communicate with them during meals
