4 Main Industries in Atlantic Canada

Primary Industry Jobs that come from natural resources. Ex: fishing, mining, forestry, and farming. Can you think of another example?

Secondary Industry Jobs that take natural resources and turn them into something else Ex: manufacturing plants, factories, and processing plants (ex: McCain’s turns potatoes into fries) Can you think of another example?

Tertiary Industry Jobs where people help others, or offer their services (usually need training first!) Ex: doctors, lawyers, teachers, dentists, repair persons, electricians. Can you think of another example?

Quaternary Industry Jobs that involve offering services using specialized technologies. Ex: research scientists, software designers, computer technicians

Group Activity #1 Is it Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, or Quaternary? Selling fish fillets Making bread Wood harvesting Working in a bookstore Dental hygienist Canning peas Designing a computer program that charts attendance Making leather shoes Gold mining

Group Activity #2 Which industry is largest in our Area? 1.Write a list of jobs your parents have had, or have now. (Person 1) 2.Figure out if they are Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Quaternary. (Person 2 writes P,S,T or Q) 3.Write the jobs on the Class Tally.(Person3) 4.Figure out what % of the jobs are Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Quaternary. 5.When the whole class is done, we will find the %, based on the class tally.
