Stopping Authorization Card Signing BEFORE It Begins CVR Dr Charles L Hughes

EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT A CVR VALUE SYSTEMS APPROACH 6 WAYS TO COMMUNICATE WHY UNION CARDS ARE TO BE AVOIDED

Values are… Created through language Learned by experiences Alternative realities Deeply programmed Resistant to change

CLANNISH Respects experienced & competent leaders Needs closeness to the work group Family always comes first Job security is very important Believes in always doing a good job

Union Viewpoint Unquestioning obedience to Chieftain Absolute literal acceptance Applicable only within own Clan Irrelevant when dealing with other clans Legality is non-issue

Ideas: Clannish Chieftain must be trustworthy Clear instructions from the chieftain Redundant reminders not to sign Cost of dues to family buying habits Outsider intervention into family

CYNICAL Prefers to be self-reliant in tough situations Can handle more stress than others Prefers to work alone – not groups Likes a tough boss & clear expectations Looks out for own interests

Union Viewpoint Disregard of laws & customs Consequences are irrelevant Will conform on surface Plots to violate rules Blames others if caught

Ideas: Cynical If possible, correct this “hiring error” before organizing begins Emphasize consequences for Solicitation & Distribution Alienate him/her from the Clan Discipline for any coercion of others “Dis-invite” from most meetings

CONVENTIONAL Expects ethically pure management Believes work should always be done correctly & with top quality Loyal to the organization & USA Knows right from wrong in all matters Seniority is very important

Union Viewpoint Believes the written word is absolute and literal Based in religious beliefs Perceives rules as unyielding Internalized codes of conduct Punishes for errors

Ideas: Conventional Refer often to written Company policies Emphasize authorization cards as legal documents (power-of-attorney) Highlight tradition of being Unionfree Documented corruption in unions (only where true) Apologize profusely for own mistakes

COMPETITIVE Prefers work that is challenging Believes getting ahead & making money is top reason for working Always looking for advancement Likes people with high energy Believes can learn a lot from managers

Union Viewpoint Ethics subordinate to own goals Actions always involve money Alternative career opportunity Politician, not a “true-believer” Litigates meaning of words

Ideas: Competitive Management career would pay better (with more “perks”) than union position Loss of individual identity& achievement Dues do not have a good ROI Union headquarters controls the locals Why sign a card & let someone else represent own interests?

COMPASSIONATE Prefers chance to work with people Work-group compatibility is key Believes company should accommodate people’s special needs Puts people before productivity Competition is to be avoided

Union Viewpoint Protective of the masses Concern for environment Anti-establishment bias Mission is to limit power Worldly viewpoint

Ideas: Compassionate Divisiveness between card-signers versus non-signers – everyone knows Loss of secret-ballot is evidence of union’s “undemocratic” regime Enforced uniformity forecloses helping those with special needs Unions rule by enforcement of contract Penalties for disobeying union committee

CONSCIOUS Prefers work that gives chance to learn Believes in continuous improvement Likes chances to do new things or do things differently Freedom from rules that make no sense Prefers to work with people from whom one can learn new things

Union Viewpoint Selectively applied Adaptive to situation Basically Conventional Acknowledges exceptions Creates higher concepts

Ideas: Conscious Give information only when asked Attempt no persuasion or lecturing More interested in the process of organizing than Unions, per se Likely to question others about their union views Could be helpful in raising doubts about unions & the meaning of cards

VALUES Remember – we are all mixtures of these Values We all have to learn to listen & communicate in different ways to people with different values We are all hired & paid to change behavior – not values But, we can change behavior without changing values © Charles Hughes CVR Dallas 2009
