5
1 fertilizes the egg – happens in fallopian tube Sperm releases an enzyme(acrosome) to penetrate egg covering. Inside, it loses tail and the 2 nuclei combine to form the zygote(fertilized egg with 46 chromosomes Once a sperm enters, the egg hardens and does not allow another sperm to enter
6
Twins Identical – zygote divides within 2 days Fraternal – 2 eggs are fertilized
7
Zygote and Blastocyst Zygote – 0-5 days - when sperm meets egg -1 cell and begins dividing Blastocyst – 3-7 days - a ball of cells with an inner and outer shell – inner becomes embryo, outer becomes placenta
8
Embryo and Fetus Embryo – 1-8 weeks – all body parts develop Fetus – 8 weeks to delivery
9
Germ Layers of early Embryonic Development Ectoderm - produces the brain and integumentary system. Also the lining of the mouth, salivary glands, nasal passageways, and anus. Plus the skull, teeth, and endocrine system
10
Inner layers Mesoderm becomes the muscular, skeletal, cardiovascular, and lymphatic systems, the kidneys and portions of the urinary tract, the gonads and most of the reproductive tracts and parts of endocrine Endoderm - most of the digestive system, the exocrine glands, and the liver and pancreas. Most of the respiratory system, and portions of the urinary and reproductive systems (gametes). Portions of the endocrine system
11
Development Implantation to uterus 1 week after fertilization – baby is size of the head of a pin Umbilical cord and placenta develop Placenta – organ that connects fetus to womb for nutrient uptake, waste removal and gas exchange Umbilical cord – connects fetus to placenta Amniotic sac begins to form fluid filled sac for protection of developing baby
12
4 weeks - Spinal cord is developing 200 cells in 3 layers Endoderm– internal organs Mesoderm – bones, circulatory, kidney, muscles, reproductive Ectoderm– skin, brain, nerves and hair About the size of a dime
13
5 weeks - Eyes beginning to develop Hand and foot plates forming Head much larger than trunk Heart begins to beat
14
6 weeks - Arm and leg buds forming Heart and liver developing Brain activity can be monitored Oral and nasal cavities beginning to develop
