2 Location, Location, Location Europe is a continent, but is actually part of a larger landmass including both Europe and Asia. Westward from the Ural Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean and Southward from the Arctic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Europe contains two main sub regions Western Europe and Eastern Europe.

3 Western Europe

4 The Land Early Civilizations settled in the plains because of fertile soil, trade and travel. Lowlands became marshy, technology was developed to drain the land for farming and building. The Alps, the Pyrenees, and the Apennines are the three major mountain ranges in Europe. Rivers provide travel routes, hydro electric power and fishing. (canals have been added) The longest river completely in Western Europe is the Rhine.

5 Resources Rich deposits of iron ore, coal, uranium, copper and other minerals. (These helped the industrial revolution) Energy-many have turned to imported oil. North Sea has supplied some oil and gas to UK and other European nations. France has turned to nuclear power for 35% of their energy.

6 Heritage of Greece and Rome 430 BC the Greek city-state of Athens was at war with its neighbor, Sparta.
