The role of the Health Professions Council Multi-professional regulator Those registered are called ‘registrants’ Created by legislation – Health Professions Order 2001 ‘to safeguard the health and well-being of persons using or needing the services of registrants’ UK-wide remit

The role of the Health Professions Council sets standards approves courses that meet them registers those who pass them holds them to its standards HPC

The standards There are four sets of standards Standards of conduct, performance and ethics Standards of proficiency Standards of education and training Standards of continuing professional development

Standards of conduct, performance and ethics Describe the behaviour and conduct expected of registrants Apply to registrants & prospective registrants

Standards of proficiency Threshold for safe and effective practice Students must be able to meet these standards when they complete an approved programme

Standards of education and training Must be met by education providers Ensure that all those completing an approved programme meet the standards of proficiency

Standards of continuing professional development Must be met by all registrants Link registrants’ ongoing learning and development with their continued registration

Fitness to practise HPC can take action when there are concerns about a registrant’s conduct or competence Registrants are responsible for meeting the standards on an ongoing basis www.hpc-uk.org/complaints

Information on regulation HPC created to protect the public Independent of government, professional bodies and trade unions Statutory regulator – must be HPC registered to use a protected title - for example ‘Physiotherapist’ and ‘Physical therapist’ Applies to public and private sector

How does this affect you? HPC does not register students or trainees Standards of conduct, performance and ethics apply to those studying to join a profession regulated by HPC This means that your behaviour whilst studying can impact on your ability to register with HPC

How to apply for registration You need to register with HPC before you are able to start work using a protected title Application forms can be downloaded from www.hpc-uk.org/applywww.hpc-uk.org/apply Do not return the forms until your education provider has notified HPC that you have successfully completed your programme

How to apply for registration Your application must include: - character reference; - certified copies of two forms of identification; and - registration fee.

How to apply for registration Character reference must be completed by: - a person of good standing in the community who has known you for at least three years Students often ask personal tutors to complete these

How to apply for registration Your two forms of identification must be certified: - signed and dated as a true copy of the original Professionals that can certify include: - registered health professionals, teachers, accountants, solicitors and bank managers.

How to apply for registration Students currently receive a 50% discount on the first two years registration Current fees (2010-11) - Application fee: £53 - Registration fee: £76 for two years (including discount) To receive the discount you must apply within two years of qualifying

How to apply for registration To prevent delays in processing please ensure that: - forms are complete before returning them - you have included your payment Forms usually take between 7 and 10 working days to process

How to apply for registration Once registered your details will appear immediately online at www.hpcheck.org www.hpcheck.org

How to apply for registration You will received a certificate and ID card shortly after registering

How to apply for registration Your authentication card carries a code - this allows you to change your contact details securely online Please keep your card safe as you will need your code each time you contact HPC It is vitally important that you keep your contact details up-to-date

How to stay registered In order to meet the standards for CPD you must: - undertake and record learning activities For more information on the CPD standards - refer to the online CPD presentation - read the guide to meeting these standards

How to stay registered Registration renewal - Every two years you must renew your registration - Three months before your registration ends, HPC will notify you You can either: -renew online; or -complete a registration renewal form

How to stay registered You must: - check that your contact details are correct; - read and sign the declarations; - check your payment method; and - return the form to HPC by the specified date.
