What is Manual Handling? Moving a load by hand or bodily force: Lifting Putting down Pushing Pulling Carrying

Three things to always remember! 1 - Always use mechanical methods if possible e.g. Forklifts Levers Trolleys

Three things to always remember! 2 - Know what YOU can handle! Check the weight before you lift Ask for assistance if you need it Carry out a check: rock the load from side to side, then try lifting a small amount

Three things to always remember! 3 - Look around you Is there good lighting? Are there obstacles in your path (steps, changes in levels, floors) Weather – rain, wind, heat

The six steps to Manual Handling 5. Raise the load smoothly Straighten your knees to stand up Use your leg muscles Keep the load close to your body
