AMRSP Workshop Oct 08 Peter Elsenaar Road Safety - Global Context 1.2 million deaths, 50 million injuries per year WHO estimate made in May 2008 of 2.4 million deaths by 2030 #2 cause of death in 4 – 29 year olds (2002) #3 cause of death in 30 – 44 year olds (2002) 85% of casualties in low and middle income countries Incalculable pain and suffering $65 billion per year financial cost in low and middle income countries – and growing fast This $65 billion is a prize that we can win by investing in road safety..and if we do not, we will continue to lose more than a million people every year 3
